“The skills, tools, and industry connections I gained during my studies have shaped the way I approach projects and operate as a designer…”

CARIS NORWELL

I founded Vibe Design Studio in 2017 as a way to bring my lifelong passion for interior design to life. I’ve loved the idea of being an Interior Designer since I was 11 years old, and over more than a decade in the industry I’ve had the privilege of working across cabinetry design, renovations, and full-home selections for award-winning builds.

My love of travel and the experience of living in different cities have shaped the way I design — I’m always inspired to create spaces that feel timeless, thoughtful, and uniquely personal to each client. What began as a one-woman business has now grown into a studio supported by a talented team, allowing me to specialise in detailed selections and design for both new builds and renovations.

Working closely with suppliers and trades throughout the Perth and Peel region has helped me build strong, lasting relationships and a trusted network of professionals. I know that the selections process can feel overwhelming, so my focus is always on making the experience flexible, collaborative, and stress-free.

What first brought you to NM TAFE, and what did you hope to achieve when you arrived?

I chose NM TAFE for its hands-on, practical approach. In 2011, I was studying Interior Architecture at university but quickly realised it felt too theoretical and disconnected from real industry practice. I wanted an education that reflected the design world, and NM TAFE offered exactly that. I transitioned and graduated with an Advanced Diploma in 2013.

What’s a defining memory or moment from your time at TAFE that has stayed with you?

A standout memory from my time at TAFE was our exhibition night. Showcasing our projects and celebrating with friends was a moment that really cemented my passion for design.

Which project, experience, or person most shaped your creative direction?

For me, it wasn’t a single project or person, but a collective of experiences that shaped my creative direction. The practical, hands-on skills I gained at TAFE gave me the confidence to approach design in a real and grounded way, travel experience opened up possibilities and my early work experience in cabinetry helped me understand construction, detailing and how spaces actually come together. I’ve always known interior design was what I wanted to do, and those combined experiences really cemented the path I’m on today.

How did studying at NM TAFE influence the way you work or think today?

The course gave me a strong foundation in the key programs I still use daily, such as CAD and SketchUp, and it introduced me to many of the suppliers I continue to collaborate with in my design practice. The skills, tools, and industry connections I gained during my studies have shaped the way I approach projects and operate as a designer.

What are you working on now, and what drives your current practice?

We work across a wide range of residential projects, from small bathroom renovations to full home transformations and new builds up to $3 million. At any time, we manage around 30 active projects, each with its own unique brief and challenges. Our business is driven by a love of creativity and problem-solving, paired with a commitment to functional, practical design. We value strong relationships with clients and builders and are inspired by watching visions evolve into finished spaces.

What milestone or achievement in your career feels most connected to your TAFE experience?

A milestone that feels most connected to my time at TAFE was winning the HIA 2024 South West Housing Award for Renovation/Addition Project of the Year. For this home, we created a full 3D visualisation so clients could clearly understand the design before construction. The 3D modelling skills I learned at TAFE were key to bringing that project to life, and it was a proud moment to see them contribute to an award-winning result.

What does being part of NM TAFE’s 125-year creative legacy mean to you?

It feels incredibly meaningful to be part of NM TAFE’s 125-year creative legacy. It gave me the foundation, the skills, and the industry mindset that shaped the designer I am today.
